Music Tutoring
I offer 1:1 teaching for complete beginners up to grade 6 ABRSM standard on piano and flute. If you are interested in learning just for fun or have an important exam coming up, we can look at a variety of musical genres whilst working on the foundations of reading music, technique, performance, and scales. I also offer support for music classes, helping with theory and GCSE composition coursework.
Credentials:
I have 15+ years of musical experience and am currently expanding my repertoire and working towards a piano diploma. I passed my ABRSM Grade 8 exams with merit on both piano and flute (2017), and received distinction for my Grade 5 music theory (2013); I attended the Junior Music School and ensemble classes at Sheffield Music School (2011-13); I earned an A* for GCSE music and held a scholarship at Sixth Form where I was also awarded a Music Prize. I've played first flute in numerous school orchestras, and Ampleforth College's production of Stephen Sondheim's musical 'Into the Woods'; I also played tenor saxophone in the College's Big Band, playing various gigs including Pickering War Weekend in 2017. I've had the pleasure of attending classical performance masterclasses from renowned musicians such as Sholto Kynoch, and have been taught by a number of award winning musicians such as Arthur Bocaneanu, Krzysztof Urbanski, and Dr Sarah McNulty. I am currently a Music and Art Graduate Assistant for Ampleforth College, where I tutor music theory, assist in all KS3 music classes, teach piano, accompany students and organise recitals for the Junior House.
Lessons start from £15 for 30 mins, depending on grade level and theory requirements.
Art Tutoring
For those looking for support for schoolwork / portfolios, or beginners who love creative activities, I provide 1:1 tailored tutoring with a mix of fine art mediums and arts & crafts techniques on offer. Classes blended with beginners' lessons in Art History are also available, involving introductions to various movements and how to conduct artist research for GCSE & A level.
Credentials:
I've recently graduated from the University of Warwick with a 2:1 Bachelor of Arts (with Honours) degree in History of Art. This enabled me to develop my knowledge of art significance throughout history whilst gaining transferable skills in analytical thinking, written and spoken communication, and presenting ideas with clarity. The course also involved studying in Venice for a term in 2019, and taking an 'Art and Interpretation' module based at the National Trust property, Waddesdon Manor. I have given multiple seminar presentations in various settings, from classrooms to museums and galleries. I held an art scholarship at secondary school and achieved firsts in my 'Practical Art' and 'Exhibiting the Contemporary' modules. In 2023 I attended the Drawing Marathon short course at the Royal Drawing School, developing my fine art skills and practice further. I'm eager to share my enthusiasm and knowledge gained from my experience. As a Music and Art Graduate Assistant for Ampleforth College, I am also leading prep sessions for sixth form and assisting within the Art Department across year groups. I particularly enjoy hosting workshops and crafting sessions within the Junior House on a weekly basis, and am looking forward to establishing my teaching career in the secondary school sector.
Lessons start from £20/hr, depending on year group and materials required.
Why hire a tutor?
More than just playing instruments and making art, valuable transferable soft skills can also be developed from the 1:1 classes listed. Opportunities to practise problem solving and patience are frequently encountered in artistic endeavours. Similarly from a musical perspective, the discipline required to sit down and practise, and the confidence that comes with performing in front of an audience, undeniably builds character!
I'll always be extremely thankful to my parents for the opportunities I have received from a young age, how my creative interests in art and music were nurtured and have become an intrinsic part of who I am today. That being said, I aim to pass on as much enthusiasm and expertise as I can to each of my students, in the hope they also learn to appreciate the value of the arts.
