SECTION ONE - FINAL MAJOR PROJECT

Music to my Eyes is the working title for producing my final piece: A series of prints and mixed media with an audio component. The premise is on the translation of materials into other forms. The relationship between music and art will be a topical area of research throughout my project and I want to explore how urban and domestic noise can be 'translated' into figurative mixed media and an organised sound composition. I will depict key themes of everyday life and the passing of time, to be seen whilst the viewer listens to a short soundtrack. The audio in question will have a foundation of music theory and include recordings manipulated with digital software (Soundation). The momentum of the everyday is the driving force behind this project, and I aim to manifest how art can be found in daily life or similarly, how daily life can be translated into art.

SECTION TWO - INFLUENCES, RESEARCH, SOURCES AND IDEAS

As a musician, I am very interested in the relationship between art and music. I find installation art with a musical component the most exciting, as an experience that stimulates various senses. Exhibitions in the Venice biennale that influence my work involved Angelica Mesiti in the Australian pavilion; the various contributors to the Japanese pavilion; and Zak Moultaka’s dialogue in The Death of James Lee Byars. Their exhibition catalogues are fundamental sources to my research in terms of how I may coordinate figurative art with musical components. I also plan to research theories behind art and music, which may lead to artists such as Kandinsky, who famously had synesthesia. Similarly, regarding my key themes of time, everyday life, and momentum, I plan to visit sites with an abundance of connotations such as.the ruins of Byland Abbey and Rievaulx Abbey, which are in my home county of North Yorkshire.

SECTION THREE -TECHNIQUES, PROCESSES AND TIMESCALE

I intend to use mixed media, taking photos and editing them on my ipad using features available on its Gallery, Instagram and Google Docs. I will then ‘translate’ these photos into acrylic paintings, drawings, and prints, so I will experiment with a variety of printing techniques using lino, etching, mono printing, and using the printing press available in the studio. The soundtrack will be composed of recordings from daily life, such as noises from public transport, inside the house, conversation and electronic devices. The software I will be using for this includes the sound recorder on my phone, which I will input to my laptop to be edited with a mixing software called Soundation.

SECTION FOUR - METHOD OF EVALUATION

I will deem my work successful if my sketchbook shows with clarity the progression of my research, and if my Final Major Project manifests a series of prints and a composition that ultimately show logical connections on the relationship between art and music. Evaluation will be aided by viewer feedback.

APPENDIX

The module spans 12 weeks, so within this timescale, I plan to use the first 8 weeks for my research and planning, collecting photos and sound recordings, then the last four weeks will be spent creating my Final Major Project.
