UNIVERSITY OF WARWICK ART HISTORY MODULE: PRACTICAL ART

This 2nd year module was established to give students a greater appreciation of the realities of creative practice by providing an opportunity to practice fine art alongside their art-historical studies, including an introduction to printmaking. The module aided the development of a personal visual language, encouraging students to look for new directions. Opportunities for formal sessions and structured guidance were available, whilst students developed an independent artistic practice and an awareness of the nature of creative and technical artistic processes.

Assessment:

A Statement of Intent.

A completed and well-presented sketch book:

- reflecting ongoing progress and research,

- incorporating experimental work that reflects a set of ideas with academic underpinning,

- demonstrating the students’ knowledge and understanding of their chosen practice.

Portfolio of other works outside of the sketch book which are relevant to the final exhibition piece(s).

Final exhibition work that will be professionally presented and hung/installed for general public view.

An Artist statement to be hung alongside the final piece(s).

By the end of the module, I was able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of drawing methods and printmaking techniques

  • Demonstrate an ability to produce and select work(s) for an exhibition

  • Demonstrate an ability to reference historical and contemporary artists that are relevant to my own practice

  • Demonstrate self-reliance and independent thought in pursuit of practical outcomes.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the contextual knowledge and the relevance of my chosen area of study.

  • Provide evidence of the origins of my work that reflects a set of interests.

  • Demonstrate the capacity to evaluate progress and realisation of materials and apply critical judgements to analyse your work.

  • Apply knowledge of process to my work.

  • Recognise the possibility of innovative approaches to development of practice.

MOMENTUM

Momentum

Welcome to my project: MOMENTUM.

I decided to create a website so I could choose how the multimedia components of my work were to be presented. My work was always going to involve music in some way, and the development lead to composing musical accompaniments. This platform allows the viewer to hear my musical compositions whilst viewing my visual art at the same time.

Refer to Order of Viewing below to read the artist research, then see the practical art development which includes 'music experimentation' and the project evaluation, before viewing the final works for the show. The portfolio items have all been mentioned in the sketchbook 'practical art development' section and are simply an image gallery.
